That's actually really neat. I thought everyone said "This is Greek" if it is a foreign language. Guess not! Thanks for sharing.

I agree. Why can't people use the full word instead of short-cuts. It kind of annoys me too to be honest (even thought I do this all the time :wacky:).

My motivation is that I can travel to a lot more places if I know more languages. I can actually speak with the local people and not use hand signs.

When I'm tired, I get confused with there and their. Sounds silly, but I sometimes make the mistake... -
I think British English is more refined for sure. They talk more elegantly than Americans. However, I also believe that English is just.. well English. Nothing different in England than in America.

Do you find it very difficult
leahcim132 replied to kmpisces's topic in Chinese Language | Discussion
I found it a bit difficult. Just do it little by little and I think you find it OK. However, if you are never going to use it in your life then I suggest not learning it since it will be a waste of time... -
It varies for people. Some might find one dialect easier than the other. Just my 2 cents.

I agree. Eventually, humans will extinct. Same thing with languages. It is only natural that they extinct, but I am glad there are organizations trying to stop extinction.

Do you watch movies with or without subtitles?
leahcim132 replied to jodig's topic in Language Learning
I watch movies with subtitles. It helps me learn new words and understand when to use them. I guess it's different for some people. -

I use slang all the time, even in other languages. I find it easier to use slangs rather than normal words... if you know what I mean.

Learning 2 languages at once vs one at a time?
leahcim132 replied to pdxchristine's topic in Language Learning
Learning 2 languages at the same time is definitely a lot harder. You have a lot to learn and it might be difficult to get all that information into your head. -
Thanks for sharing this! I've never actually heard of this and I think this will be very helpful for me.

Which language do you think is easier, French or Spanish?
leahcim132 replied to IssamH's topic in Language Learning
If you get French, Spanish will be easy to learn and vice versa. They are equally challenging to learn in my opinion. -
So my teacher said if I want to write about fiction, I have to write in the present tense. As someone who is not that good in English, I have no idea why...

Do you think online tutorials are effective?
leahcim132 replied to Judhie's topic in English Language | Discussion
In my opinion, I think they are OK. Not as good as studying person to person in my opinion. You get to ask more questions. I am a person who likes to ask a lot of question so my opinion may seem a bit bias haha. -
Do you Start sentences with Conjuctions like But?
leahcim132 replied to wameyo's topic in English Language | Discussion
This is really well said. It is completely fine to start a sentence with a conjuction AS LONG as it's not a fragment. -
Normally it's an hour. However, it should be technically a hour because of the H. However, it is silent (you don't say haour.. you say our) so it is an instead of a.

I feel you. I always forget those pesky characters. They are so hard to learn... but I guess the only suggestion that I can give you is to practice the chinese characters everyday. Or else, it will slip right past you.

So the other day, I was talking to some people when all of a sudden, this Hispanic looking person wanted to join our conversation but didn't really talk at first. I thought she didn't speak any English at all so I just made hand motions to invite her to our conversation. Well.. you know what happens next. She said "Thanks a lot, but you know I can speak perfect English!" I was so shocked because I didn't expect her to speak ANY English at all. Did this ever happen to you?
