How to use the gamertag generator

  1. Choose what to make: Gamertags, Clan & squad names or Clan tags (a short tag in brackets with the clan name it came from).
  2. Pick a style. There are 11 of them, from cool, fierce and sweaty to funny, cute and anime-inspired. Mix of styles shuffles them all together.
  3. Pick a game type if you like. The words of that kind of game are mixed into the style, so a fierce racing tag and a fierce fantasy tag sound different.
  4. Set the length: any length, short (8 characters or fewer), exactly 3, 4 or 5 letters, or the Xbox and PlayStation name limits.
  5. Add an extra if you want one: numbers, the xX…Xx frame, l33t speak, an underscore or space between words, a symbol such as ツ, or a clan tag in front.
  6. Type your name or a favorite word into the box to build every result around it. Tap a gamertag to copy it, and tap ♥ to keep a shortlist. Press Generate for a new batch; you will not see the same tag twice during a visit.

The generator works from 1,364 hand-picked words, 47 Japanese words and 86 clan words, written for this page and checked for anything rude. It never uses the names of real games, game characters or famous players, and it runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.

What makes a funny gamertag work

The best funny gamer names are built on contrast. Put a serious gaming word next to something harmless (TacticalPossum, NoScopeGrandma) or treat an everyday object as if it were a player (ToasterWithWifi, PancakeIsLagging). The other classic is the joke at your own expense: lag, being away from the keyboard, needing snacks. Everyone who games has been there, so AFKToaster gets a laugh in any lobby.

Keep a funny tag short enough to read at a glance, because the joke has to land in the second it appears on a scoreboard. And keep it clean: crude names get reported and reset, while a silly one like LukewarmIntern is still funny years later. The funny style mixes 53 silly adjectives, 83 snacks, animals and gadgets, and 33 running jokes, and with a game type it pokes fun at that genre too.

Anime gamertags: Japanese words and what they mean

The anime style builds tags from real Japanese words written in the Latin alphabet, so a tag like KageKitsune actually means something: shadow fox. Here are the words it uses. Pair two of them, add an English word, or end your name with an honorific such as -chan or -senpai. The generator never uses the names of anime characters.

Short gamertags: 3, 4 and 5 letter ideas

Short tags are easy to type, easy to say and look clean on a scoreboard. Choose 3 letters, 4 letters or 5 letters under Length and the generator only shows real words of exactly that length (85 three-letter, 188 four-letter and 232 five-letter words in all). Short words are the most popular, so many will be taken; add a number or the xX…Xx frame to get a version that is free.

What is an OG gamertag?

An OG gamertag (slang for “original” or old-school) is a short, clean tag with no numbers or decoration: one real word such as Onyx or Gale, or a very short pair. Most of these were claimed in the early years of online gaming, which is why players who own one rarely let it go. The Clean / OG style gives you tags in that spirit, and the 3, 4 and 5 letter options go even shorter.

You will see OG gamertags offered for sale. Buying one usually means buying someone else’s account, which most platforms’ terms of service forbid, and the account can be taken back or closed. A fresh tag of your own is the safer choice.

Gamertag rules and character limits

Every platform has its own rules for names. Choose Xbox or PlayStation under Length / platform and the generator only shows tags that fit, always starting with a letter.

PlatformLengthCharacters and notes
Xbox gamertagUp to 12 charactersLetters, numbers and spaces. If someone already has your gamertag, Xbox adds a short number suffix after a # sign to tell you apart.
PlayStation Online ID3 to 16 charactersLetters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, starting with a letter.
Steam profile nameUp to 32 charactersYou can change it at any time. The account name you sign in with is separate and cannot be changed.

How do you get rid of the numbers in an Xbox gamertag? The suffix only appears when the name is already in use, so the way to lose it is to pick a gamertag nobody else has. That is where a generator helps: the less common the combination, the better the chance it is free. Rules change from time to time, and only the platform can tell you whether a name is available, so check before you settle on one.

Gamertag extras: numbers, xX…Xx, l33t speak and symbols

Extras are added on top of the name, and the generator drops any result that breaks the length you chose.

  • Numbers make a taken name available. The generator uses neat numbers like 7, 101 or 404 and never adds numbers with a rude or hateful meaning. Leave your birth year out: it tells strangers your age.
  • xX…Xx is the classic frame from the early days of online gaming: xXNameXx, or xX_Name_Xx where underscores are allowed. Today it is mostly used with a wink.
  • L33t speak swaps letters for numbers that look like them. The generator keeps the first letter and changes only four letters, so the tag stays readable:
LetterBecomes
A / a4
E / e3
I / i1
O / o0
  • Under_score / spaces separates the words: Silent_Viper, or Silent Viper on Xbox, where spaces are allowed and underscores are not.
  • Symbols add one of ツ 々 彡 ☆ ✦ ッ to the tag. Many games accept them in display names, but Xbox gamertags and PlayStation Online IDs do not, so the generator leaves them off when one of those is chosen. For more decorations, see the Fancy Text Generator.
  • Clan tag puts a short tag in front: [NOVA] SilentViper. Where brackets are not allowed, the tag is joined with a space or an underscore instead.

Clan names and clan tags

Playing with a regular squad? Choose Clan & squad names for names like the ones below. They follow the style and game type you pick, so a funny clan sounds like a funny clan and a racing team sounds like a racing team. Type a name into the box for a clan built around it.

Clan tags

A clan tag is the short label in front of every member’s name. Choose Clan tags and the generator makes one from each clan name: the whole first word when it is short (ZERO), its consonants when it is long (Viper becomes VPR), or the initials of a three-word name. Two to four capital letters are easiest to read on a scoreboard or in a lobby list.

  • [NEON] Neon Gaming
  • [CGR] Cougar Outfit
  • [MGNT] Magnetic Protocol
  • [SLR] The Solar Heroes
  • [INSN] Insane Protocol
  • [CHRG] The Charging Panthers
  • [RG] Rogue Warband

  • [UNP] The Unpaid Bagels
  • [QCK] Quick Gaming
  • [SLP] Sleepy Panda Garden

How to come up with a good gamertag

What should my gamertag be? Start with something you like (an animal, a color, a food, a word from your favorite kind of game) and let the generator suggest combinations. Then run your shortlist through these checks:

  • Say it out loud. Teammates have to call your name in voice chat. If it takes three tries to pronounce, it will get shortened anyway.
  • Keep it short. Twelve characters or fewer fits everywhere and stays readable on a scoreboard.
  • Go easy on decoration. One extra (a number, an underscore or the xX frame) is plenty. Strings like xX_N1ght_W0lf_99_Xx are hard to read, type and remember.
  • Stay private. Leave out your full name, age, birth year, school and town. The name box works just as well with a nickname or a favorite word.
  • Think ahead. A tag you love at twelve may make you wince at twenty. Words that are simply cool, funny or strange age better than in-jokes.
  • Keep it clean. Platforms reset or ban offensive names, and a friendly tag gets more party invites. Everything this generator suggests is family-friendly.
  • Make it yours. Avoid the names of real games, characters and famous streamers. Search for your favorite before you commit, and claim it on every platform you use.

A worked example

Say your friends call you Fox, you mostly play racing games, and you play on Xbox. Type Fox into the box, then pick the Cool style, the Racing game type and Xbox (up to 12). The generator suggests tags like these:

  • BurningFox
  • NitroFox
  • FoxPiston
  • FoxBrake
  • ZenFox
  • FoxZero
  • FoxDash
  • StreetFox

Every one is 12 characters or fewer and starts with a letter, so it fits an Xbox gamertag. Tap ♥ on the ones you like, generate a few more batches, then read your favorites out loud and keep the one that sounds best in voice chat. If it turns out to be taken, switch Extras to Numbers for a version with a number on the end.

What is a gamertag?

A gamertag is the name other players see when you play online. The word comes from Xbox Live, the online service Microsoft launched in 2002, where it is still the official term. Today people use it for any gaming name: PlayStation calls it an Online ID, PC players often say username or IGN (in-game name), and plenty of players simply say gamer tag or gamer name. Because it appears on every scoreboard, friend list and stream, a gamertag works much like a nickname: it is how the gaming world knows you.

Frequently asked questions

What is a gamertag?
A gamertag is the name other players see when you play online. The word comes from Xbox Live, Microsoft's online service, and today people use it for any gaming name or in-game name.
What should my gamertag be?
Start with something you like, such as an animal, a color or a word from your favorite kind of game, and let the generator combine it. Pick a tag that is easy to say in voice chat, 12 characters or fewer, and free of your real name, age and location.
How long can an Xbox gamertag be?
Xbox gamertags can be up to 12 characters, using letters, numbers and spaces. Choose Xbox under Length / platform and every suggestion fits that limit.
Why does my Xbox gamertag have numbers at the end?
Xbox adds a number suffix after a # sign when someone else already has the same gamertag. To get a gamertag without the numbers, pick a name nobody else is using.
What is an OG gamertag?
An OG gamertag is a short, clean tag with no numbers or decoration, usually a single real word. Choose the Clean / OG style, or 3, 4 or 5 letters, for tags in that spirit.
What is a sweaty or tryhard gamertag?
Sweaty or tryhard gamertags look like they belong to a ranked grinder: a short crisp word, an x in place of a vowel (Nxva), itz or iam in front, often all lowercase. The Sweaty / tryhard style makes them.
Can I use symbols in my gamertag?
Many games accept symbols such as ツ or ☆ in display names, but Xbox gamertags and PlayStation Online IDs do not. Choose Symbols under Extras with Any length, and the generator leaves them off for Xbox and PlayStation.
What are some funny gamer names?
Funny gamertags put a serious gaming word next to something harmless, like TacticalPossum, NoScopeGrandma or ToasterWithWifi. Choose the Funny style for hundreds more, all family-friendly.
How do I make a clan tag?
Choose Clan tags and the generator makes a short tag from each clan name: a short first word like ZERO, the consonants of a longer word (Viper becomes VPR), or the initials of a three-word name. Two to four capital letters are easiest to read.
Are these gamertags free to use?
Yes. The generator is free with no sign-up, runs in your browser, and every tag is original. Only the platform can tell you whether a tag is still available, so check before you settle on one.
