How to use the nickname generator

  1. For a nickname from a name, type the name (a first name, or a first and last name) and keep From a name selected. Press Generate. A card shows the traditional nicknames for the name, and the list below it adds new ideas: friendly forms, sweet and silly versions, rhymes, initials and, with a last name, the kind of nickname teammates use.
  2. For a kind of nickname, open the Nicknames menu and pick one of the 24 types: for a boyfriend or girlfriend, couples, best friends, group chats, brothers and sisters, twins, kids, mom, dad, grandparents, funny, cool, boyish, unisex, sporty, gamer, coworkers, pets or cars. If you also type a name, some of the cute, cool, sporty and gamer ideas are made with it (Izzy Bear, Captain Sam).
  3. Starts with limits the list to nicknames that begin with one letter, for when you want a J nickname for a guy named Jake or a K name to match a sibling.
  4. Tap a nickname to copy it, and tap the heart to save it to your favorites. Press Generate again for a new list: nothing repeats during your visit, and the generator tells you when you have seen every idea for a setting.

The traditional nicknames come from a list of 1,118 given names with 2,290 nicknames between them, from English classics (Elizabeth, William, Margaret) to Spanish, Italian, Greek, Polish, Russian and other names (Ignacio → Nacho, Giuseppe → Beppe, Aleksandr → Sasha). Accents are welcome: José and Zoë work as well as Joe and Zoe. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Nicknames from your name: the kinds of ideas you get

A good nickname usually comes from the name itself. These are the patterns the generator uses, from the traditional to the silly:

KindHow it worksExamples
TraditionalThe short forms a name has always had.William → Will, Bill, Billy, Liam, Wills
Friendly -y and -ieA short form plus -y or -ie, the classic English pet-name ending.Sam → Sammy, Kate → Katie, Madison → Maddie
SweetA soft word after the friendly form.Izzy Bear, Billy Boo, Katie Bug
Playful endingsBig, silly endings for friends and teammates.Samster, Maxinator, Bellazilla
AlliterationA kind or funny word that starts with the same sound. Sound, not spelling: Phil gets an F word, Cecilia an S word.Jolly Jack, Fearless Phil, Sunny Cecilia
RhymesA word that rhymes with the name or its pet form.Silly Billy, Fancy Nancy, Handy Andy, Kate the Great
DoublesThe first syllable twice, or a rhyming echo.JoJo, LuLu, Tommy Wommy
InitialsThe first letter, or both initials when you type a last name.J-Train, T-Bird, Big CJ
Last-name nicknamesThe team and school habit of shortening a surname.Smith → Smithy, Smitty; Thompson → Thommo

Names with no traditional nickname, such as Noah, Ava or Wyatt, still get plenty of ideas from the other patterns. If a name is itself a nickname, the card tells you which names it is short for: type Bill and you will see William, along with Will, Billy and Liam.

Nicknames for popular names

These are the traditional nicknames for some of the most common given names in English. Some are short forms (Alexandra → Alex), some add a friendly ending (Jennifer → Jenny), and a few look nothing like the name, for reasons explained further down (Margaret → Peggy). Type any of these names into the generator for more ideas.

Why is Bob short for Robert? Where old nicknames come from

The word nickname itself is a small accident. In Middle English an extra name was an eke name, from eke, meaning “also.” Said quickly, “an ekename” was heard as “a nekename,” and the n moved over for good. The same thing turned “an ewt” into “a newt.” Linguists call a pet name a hypocorism.

Most nicknames are simply the first part of the name, or that part with -y or -ie. The surprising ones, like Bob and Peggy, come from a habit of medieval English speakers: once a name had a short form, they liked to make rhyming versions of it.

NameNicknameHow it happened
RobertRob → BobA rhyming swap. In the Middle Ages Robert also gave Hob and Dob, which live on in the surnames Hobbs and Dobson.
WilliamWill → BillThe same rhyming swap, from W to B.
MargaretMeg → Peg, PeggyRhyming again, from M to P.
MaryMolly → PollyThe r of Mary became an l (Molly), then the M became a P.
SarahSallyThe same change of r to l.
HenryHarry, HalHarry was the everyday spoken form of Henry in medieval England; Hal comes from Harry.
JohnJackThrough Jankin, a medieval pet form of John.
EdwardEd → Ned, TedNed and Ted are rhyming forms of Ed.
MargaretDaisyThe French form of the name, Marguerite, is also the French word for a daisy.
Ann, AnneNan → NancyNan was a pet form of Ann, and Nancy grew from Nan.

Nicknames in other languages

English mostly shortens a name and adds -y or -ie. Other languages have their own pet-name endings, and many of their nicknames are as everyday as the full name. These examples are all in the generator; type the full name to see the rest. Dutch, for example, adds -je to a child’s name (Jan becomes Jantje).

LanguageTypical patternExamples
Spanish-ito and -ita, and old sound changesJuan → Juanito, Pedro → Pedrito, Rosa → Rosita, José → Pepe, Francisco → Paco, Ignacio → Nacho
Portuguese-inho and -inhaPaulo → Paulinho, Ronaldo → Ronaldinho
Italian-ino and -ina, or the end of the nameGiuseppe → Beppe, Giovanni → Gianni, Domenico → Mimmo, Lorenzo → Enzo
German-i and -chenWolfgang → Wolfi, Franziska → Franzi, Margarete → Gretchen, Johannes → Hannes
Dutchshort forms, and -je for childrenWillem → Wim, Jacobus → Koos
Polishoften -ek for boys and -sia for girlsTomasz → Tomek, Jakub → Kuba, Katarzyna → Kasia, Zofia → Zosia
Russianan everyday short form, often in -sha or -yaAleksandr → Sasha, Mikhail → Misha, Ivan → Vanya, Yekaterina → Katya, Dmitri → Dima
Greekthe end of the name, or -akisKonstantinos → Kostas, Ioannis → Giannis, Panagiotis → Takis
Hungarianshort forms with -iIstván → Pisti, György → Gyuri

Russian is the most striking case. Sasha is the usual name for an Aleksandr among family and friends, and warmer forms follow from it (Sashenka, Sashulya), so one person can be called several different things in a single day depending on who is talking.

Sporty and team nicknames

Locker-room nicknames follow a few unwritten rules. The most common is to shorten the last name: an -y on a one-syllable surname, or the Australian and British -o on a longer one. Type a first and last name and choose Sporty & team to get these along with the rest:

Last nameTeam nickname
SmithSmithy, Smitty
JonesJonesy
BrooksBrooksy
ClarkClarky
ScottScotty
MurphyMurph
ThompsonThommo
RobinsonRobbo
AndersonAndo
JacksonJacko
BennettBenno
DavisDavo

The other rules: initials (J.T., Big CJ), a skill (Hops, Wheels, Glue Hands), and the joke of calling the tallest player Tiny. Keep team nicknames clean and good-natured; the best ones are worn with pride.

  • Benchwarmer

Tips for choosing a nickname that sticks

  • Let the person like it. A nickname is a gift, and the best ones are welcome. If someone winces when they hear it, pick another.
  • Keep it short. One or two syllables is what people actually say out loud. Long names shrink on their own (Sebastian → Seb).
  • Build on something true. A shared joke, a habit or a skill makes a nickname feel earned: Hops for the best jumper, Chef for the one who cooks.
  • Try it in a sentence. “Hey, Izzy Bear” and “Pass it to J-Train” tell you quickly whether a name works in real life.
  • Mind the setting. A pet name for your partner may not be the one to use at their office party. Many people have one nickname for family, one for friends and one for the team.
  • Check the initials and the rhyme. Say the nickname with the last name, and make sure the letters don’t spell something you would rather not hear in the school hallway.

What is a nickname for William?
The traditional nicknames for William are Will, Bill, Billy, Liam and Wills. The generator adds playful ones too, such as Silly Billy and Willster.
