How to use the ship name generator
“Ship name” has two meanings, and the ship name generator covers both. A couple ship name blends two people’s names into one (Emma + Noah → Emah, Noma, Emmah). A ship name is also simply the name of a ship: a boat, a pirate ship, a spaceship, or a Viking longship.
- For a couple name, type two names in the box — Emma + Noah, Emma & Noah, Emma and Noah, or just Emma Noah — and tap Generate. You get the blends that read well, in both orders.
- For a vessel, open Generate and choose boat, pirate ship, spaceship, or Viking ship names. Then pick a style: classic, funny, elegant, or fierce. The style setting does not change couple names.
- Tap a name to copy it. The ♥ keeps it in your favorites.
Until you type two names, the couple setting shows examples made from 46 popular name pairs. The vessel names come from 414 hand-picked boat names plus 341 pirate, 555 spaceship, and 163 Viking name parts.
How couple ship names are made
“Shipping” comes from the word relationship. Fans who want two characters, or two real people, to be a couple “ship” them, and the pair gets one shared name. That name is a portmanteau: a word made by joining the start of one word to the end of another, like brunch from breakfast and lunch. Entertainment news does the same with celebrity couples, which is how Brad and Angelina became “Brangelina.”
The generator cuts each name where it breaks naturally and joins the pieces in three ways:
- Start + end. The opening syllable of one name and the closing part of the other: Emma + Noah → Emah.
- Initial swap. The opening consonants of one name go in front of the other name’s first vowel: Noah + Emma → Nemma.
- Overlap. When the two names share letters, the blend runs straight through them: Ben + Jennifer → Bennifer.
Blends shorter than three letters or longer than fourteen are dropped. A few examples:
| Names | Couple ship names |
|---|---|
| Emma + Noah | Emah, Noma, Emmah, Emoah |
| Olivia + Liam | Oliam, Olivam, Oliviam, Liamia |
| Sophia + Jackson | Jacksophia, Sackson, Jacksia, Sophison |
| Avery + Lucas | Lucery, Avas, Avucas, Lavery |
| Isabella + Mason | Mabella, Masabella, Masella, Isabason |
| Mia + Ethan | Ethia, Mithan, Methan, Miathan |
| Charlotte + Oliver | Charliver, Olilotte, Chariver, Olivotte |
| Amelia + Elijah | Amelijah, Amejah, Elilia, Amelah |
| Harper + James | Harpes, Jarper, Harames, Harmes |
| Evelyn + Benjamin | Benjalyn, Benjelyn, Evejamin, Evelamin |

Tips for a couple ship name that sounds good
- Keep a piece of both names. At least one syllable from each, or one person disappears from the name.
- Join a consonant to a vowel. Br + angelina is easy to say. Two consonant clusters pushed together are not.
- Try both orders. Emma + Noah and Noah + Emma give different results, and usually one order is clearly better.
- Stay short. A ship name longer than the longer of the two names starts to sound like both names said quickly.
- Read it as a word. Some blends turn out to be ordinary words or other people’s names, so check what yours spells before it goes on a cake or a hashtag.
To blend words that are not names, use the Word Combiner. For one person rather than a pair, try the Nickname Generator.
Boat names by style
Most boat names belong to one of a few families: traditional names taken from the sea, seabirds, stars, and virtues; graceful names from music, flowers, and mythology; and bold names for fast boats and fishing boats. Choose Boat & ship names above and a style to get more of each.

Pirate ship names
Pirate ship names follow two patterns: “The” plus an adjective and a noun, or an owner and what that owner is after. Real pirates used both. Blackbeard’s flagship was the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Stede Bonnet’s sloop was the Revenge, and Bartholomew Roberts gave the name Royal Fortune to several of his ships. Fierce ideas from the generator:

Spaceship names
Spaceship names in science fiction draw on three sources: naval tradition (virtues such as Resolute and Steadfast), astronomy (stars, orbits, and astronomers), and mythology. Real spacecraft do the same — NASA has flown a Pioneer, a Pathfinder, and a Perseverance. The generator mixes one-word names, adjective-and-noun names, and names built on 50 real stars, such as “Light of Vega.” The funny style adds long, apologetic names for ships that have seen better days.

Viking ship names
Old Norse poets rarely called a ship a ship. They used kennings, two-part poetic compounds such as “sea-steed” or “wave-horse.” The generator follows that habit with English compounds. The best-known named Viking ship is the Long Serpent, the great longship of King Olaf Tryggvason of Norway in the sagas.

Cruise ship names
Cruise lines name their fleets to a pattern, so that every ship is recognizable as theirs. Royal Caribbean’s ships end in “of the Seas” (Icon of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas). Cunard’s liners are queens: Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth, and Queen Anne. Princess Cruises ships end in “Princess.” For an invented cruise ship, pick one pattern and keep it for the whole fleet; the elegant boat names above are a good starting point.
How to choose a name for a ship: traditions and tips
- Ships are “she.” In English, ships have traditionally been called “she,” and many boats carry a woman’s name: Miss Molly, Lady Grace.
- The name goes on the stern. It is traditionally painted on the transom, the flat back of the boat, often with the home port underneath.
- Renaming is said to be unlucky. An old sailors’ superstition holds that changing a boat’s name brings bad luck. Owners who rename a boat anyway often hold a small renaming ceremony first.
- Good ship names are short and clear. The name has to be read from a distance and said over a marine radio, so one to three words work best. For boats documented with the U.S. Coast Guard, a name can have at most 33 characters and must not sound like a call for help.
- Make it mean something. A name that points to a person, a place, or the reason you bought the boat will still feel right in ten years.

Frequently asked questions
- What is a ship name?
- It can mean two things. A couple ship name blends two people's names into one, because "ship" is short for relationship. A ship name is also the name of a vessel, such as a boat, a pirate ship, or a spaceship. This generator makes both.
- How do I combine two names into a couple ship name?
- Type both names in the box, for example Emma + Noah, and tap Generate. The generator joins the start of one name to the end of the other at natural breaks, tries both orders, and shows the blends that are easy to say.
- What are some funny ship names?
- Most funny boat names are puns: Seas the Day, Knot Working, Pier Pressure, Aboat Time, Anchor Management, and Friend Ship. Choose Boat & ship names and the Funny & puns style for more.
- What are good pirate ship names?
- Good pirate ship names use "The" plus an adjective and a noun, or an owner and a goal, like The Crimson Serpent or The Widow's Revenge. A real example is Blackbeard's flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge.
- What are some famous ship names?
- Famous real ships include the Mayflower, the Santa María, HMS Victory, USS Constitution, HMS Beagle, the Cutty Sark, RMS Titanic, and Shackleton's Endurance. The table on this page gives one fact about each.
- Is it bad luck to rename a boat?
- An old sailors' superstition says so. Many owners who rename a boat hold a small renaming ceremony first, but there is no rule against choosing a new name.
- Is the ship name generator free?
- Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and it runs in your browser, so the names you type are not uploaded.
