How to use the random letter generator

A random letter generator picks a letter of the alphabet at random, with every letter equally likely. This one has three modes — pick the one that fits:

• Letter picker — one big random letter at a time. Tap Pick a letter (or press Space), tap Hear it to hear it read aloud, and see your history below.
• Alphabet wheel — spin a colorful letter wheel, great on a classroom screen or at a party.
• Letters & strings — many random letters at once (with or without repeats), or random strings of letters, numbers, and symbols.

Options work in every mode: choose from 10 alphabets, pick vowels, consonants, or your own letters, switch between uppercase and lowercase, tick No repeats to use each letter only once, and tick Skip hard letters for word games.

Pick a random letter for word games

A random letter picker is the heart of many word games. Some favorites:

• Categories games — everyone writes a word for each category starting with the chosen letter. Play our free Categories Game online.
• Stop / Tutti Frutti — race to fill in a country, a name, an animal, and a food with the letter, then shout “Stop!”
• The alphabet game — name something from a topic that starts with the letter, or spot something that starts with it on a road trip.
• Drawing and story games — draw or tell a story about things that start with the letter.

Which letters should you skip?

Very few English words start with Q, U, V, X, Y, or Z, so many word games leave them out of the letter draw. Tick Skip hard letters to do the same, and No repeats so every round gets a new letter.

Spin the alphabet wheel

Prefer a bit of suspense? The alphabet wheel (or letter spinner) spins and lands on a random letter. With No repeats, letters that have already come up turn grey and the wheel won’t land on them again — perfect for taking turns in class or at game night. The wheel works with every alphabet, and with your own custom letters too.

Random letters for kids and teachers

• Letter recognition game — pick a letter and ask children to name it, say its sound, or find something in the room that starts with it. Tap Hear it to check.
• Flash cards — use the big letter display as a digital flash card; switch to lowercase when children are ready.
• Vowels and consonants — practice just the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) or just the consonants.
• Choosing turns fairly — give each child a letter and spin the wheel.

Random letters and numbers

In Letters & strings mode you can create random strings of letters and numbers — for codes, sample data, game IDs, or classroom logins. Choose the length, which characters to include, and skip look-alike characters such as 0 and O or 1 and l so the strings are easy to read and type.

How random is it?

Each letter is picked with your browser’s built-in secure random number generator, so every letter has an equal chance: 1 in 26 (about 3.85%) for the English alphabet. That also means repeats come up sooner than most people expect — with just 7 picks there’s already a 59% chance that some letter appears twice. If you don’t want that, tick No repeats: it works like drawing letter tiles from a bag.

Random letters vs. real English

Random letters are spread evenly, but letters in English text are not — E, T, and A are the most common, while J, X, Q, and Z are rare. Approximate letter frequencies in English:
