How to unscramble words

Type your letters into the box — from a word game rack, a jumbled puzzle, or just a random mix — and the word unscrambler instantly lists every word you can make, longest first. It searches about 179,000 English words, including plurals and verb forms like “tables” and “jumped”, so it works for word games as well as everyday puzzles.

  1. Enter up to 15 letters. Add ? or * for each blank tile.
  2. Narrow the list with starts with, ends with, contains, or an exact length — handy when a word has to fit a board or a crossword gap.
  3. Sort by length, by points, or A–Z, and tap any word for a short definition.
  4. For a jumbled phrase, switch to Two words: the tool then lists every pair of words that uses all of your letters.

Anagram solver

An anagram uses all the same letters in a new order: listen → silent, heart → earth. When a word can be made from all of your letters, the unscrambler shows it right at the top as an anagram. Here are some common words with three or more anagrams:

Unscramble letters: a worked example

Six scrambled letters and every everyday word they make, with the letter points.

Unscramble two words or a phrase

Some scrambles hide two words, not one: a puzzle clue, a jumbled phrase, the letters of a name. Switch the tool to Two words and it works as a two word unscrambler: it lists every pair of words that together use all of your letters, up to 30 letters. Pairs of everyday words come first. Tick “Include less common words” to look further.

Spaces are ignored, so you can type the phrase as it is given. The two words can go in either order, which is why the tool shows each pair once. Blank tiles work for one word only.

Blank tiles and wildcards

Many word games have blank tiles that can stand for any letter. Type a ? (or *) for each one — “TRAIN?” finds trains, strain, attain and more. Letters filled by a blank score zero points, just like on a real board.

Unscramble 5, 6 and 7 letter words

Many puzzles want a word of one exact length: five letters in the daily word games, six or seven in a jumble or from a full rack. Once your letters are in, a row of buttons above the results shows how many words each length has. Tap 5 letters, 6 letters or 7 letters to see only those. Here is what the letters scarlet give:

LengthEveryday wordsAll words

6 lettersalerts, alters, cartel, caster, castle, caters, claret, clears31
5 lettersacres, alert, alter, cares, carts, caste, cater, clear66
4 lettersaces, acre, acts, ales, arcs, ares, arts, care72

If you already know where some of the letters go, the Word Finder takes a pattern, for example a known first and last letter.

Word game letter points

The point next to each word uses the classic tile values found in popular crossword-style board games:

PointsLetters
1A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T, R
2D, G
3B, C, M, P
4F, H, V, W, Y
5K
8J, X
10Q, Z

Board bonuses (double and triple letter or word squares) aren’t included, since they depend on where you place the word.

Tips for finding better words

  • Look for common endings like -ING, -ED, -ER, -EST, and -S: filter by “ends with” to see them all at once.
  • High-value letters (J, Q, X, Z) are worth building around — sort by points to find the best plays.
  • Short words matter: two- and three-letter words let you squeeze extra points out of tight spots.
  • For jumbles and daily word puzzles, set the exact length to see only words that fit.

Holiday word scrambles to play

Want a puzzle instead of an answer? These word scrambles come with hints, all the answers and two printable sheets each:

Word descrambler and unjumbler

Descramble, unjumble, unscramble, rearrange: four names for the same job. A word descrambler takes letters that are out of order and puts them back into real words, and that is what this tool does. So when a puzzle asks you to descramble words or to unjumble a set of letters, type them into the box above just as they are given.

Letters printed with gaps between them work too: “R E D U C E” is read the same as “REDUCE”. Capital or small letters make no difference.

What word list does it use?

The unscrambler combines the public-domain ENABLE word list with the SCOWL English word lists — the same kind of lists used by many word games and spell checkers — and leaves out slurs and profanity. Common words are shown in darker text so you can spot everyday words first. Definitions come from WordNet (Princeton University) and our own dictionary. Everything runs in your browser; your letters are never sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How does the word unscrambler work?
Type your letters and it checks them against about 179,000 English words, listing every word that can be made from those letters, longest first. Each letter can be used only as often as you typed it. Add ? or * for blank tiles that can be any letter.
What is an anagram solver?
An anagram uses all the same letters in a different order, like listen and silent. When a word can be made from all of your letters, the unscrambler shows it at the top as an anagram, so it works as an anagram solver too.
Can I use blank tiles or wildcards?
Yes. Type a question mark or an asterisk for each blank tile, up to 15 letters in total. Letters filled by a blank score zero points, as they do in board games.
Does it include plurals and verb forms?
Yes. The word list includes plurals, past tenses, -ing forms, and comparatives like 'tables', 'jumped', 'running', and 'bigger', because word games accept them. Tick 'Common words only' to see just everyday words.
How are the points calculated?
Points use the classic letter values from crossword-style board games (for example E = 1, K = 5, Q and Z = 10). Board bonuses aren't included because they depend on where the word is placed.
Can it unscramble two words or a phrase?
Yes. Switch to Two words and type up to 30 letters. The tool lists every pair of words that together use all of your letters, for example dormitory gives dirty room. Pairs of everyday words come first, and the two words can go in either order.
Is a word descrambler the same as a word unscrambler?
Yes. Descramble, unjumble and unscramble all mean putting mixed-up letters back into real words. Type the letters as they are given, with or without spaces between them, and the tool lists the words they make.
How do I see only 5, 6 or 7 letter words?
After you type your letters, a row of buttons above the results shows each word length with the number of words it has. Tap a length to list only those words, and tap All to see everything again.
Is it free and private?
Yes. It's free with no sign-up, and it runs in your browser — your letters are never sent anywhere.
