  1. I think it would be fascinating to learn Braille, it would be an different look and way of learning a new language. just because you don't see as many blind people on the street doesn't mean that there aren't as many. In the Fall I am planning on enrolling in a course to become a deaf interpreter; its a good skill to have and there is a demand for interpreters. I'm really looking forward to going back to school for the first time in many, many years to learn something new!
  2. I'd say that four hours is about the longest that I have managed to study and I found it exhausting! I can't even begin to imagine doing it for fourteen hours a day or longer, that is unbelievable! My mind was absolute mush after four hours and I was tired when I hit the three hour mark. All power to someone who can spend that many hours on a language but my brain would revolt if I tried it!
  3. Around the world there are many different types of sign language just like there are many different languages. the ASL or American sign language is not a universal language but other countries do incorporate a lot of it, at least in terms of some of the basic and more common signs.
  4. I think that its an excellent idea to journal in a new language although I am not advanced enough in my studies that writing a journal would significantly help me. At some point I might incorporate it but for now I am still in the basics mode and following the instructions suggested to me in the class that I am involved in.
  5. I'm really not, I realize that while I am learning, the chances of me speaking my new language in an overall awful manner is really something that I have learned to accept. I was a child when I learned my primary language so I don't remember how hard it was to learn and how long it took me to speak it well.
  6. There is no way that I could satisfactorily learn a new language in ten days, at least not learn it well. That's not enough time to master much of anything, especially a new language.
  7. Its all about fear, either the fear of failure or the fear of being pulled out of their comfort zone that will happen if they succeed. They also may not to simply make the effort, there is no easy way to learn a new language and it does take some time to master a new one. People don't generally want to change if they are comfortable where they are, it is only when they are forced into it that they finally make a change.
  8. I've tried it but the problem I have with subtitles is that they make me sleepy when I am watching a DVD. I can't simply sit and watch a video, I have to be doing something else at the same time or I will fall asleep. with the subtitles I have to stay focused on the video and in doing so I am guaranteed to fall asleep, especially at the critical moment in the film.
  9. I live in a very small town was settled in the mid 1800's. They have taken great care to keep many of the houses and larger structures within period including renovating an old mill that is used for artists and other businesses. Its delightful to walk around in and not be bombarded with giant neon signs, traffic lights, and convenience stores.
  10. Her mother's face was ashen with fear, belying her mother's reassurances that she had only been dreaming about the abomination.
  11. I could not decipher the look in her eyes, on one hand it was breathlessly soft yet on the other hand the steely and unrelenting gaze of an assassin was present. Why was she here? Was she sent to settle an old score between us or was it to rekindle the fire that always existed between us?
  12. I agree with you on that, its nit picky and at times snobby to correct someone's usage and grammar when having a conversation with them. Grammar Nazi indeed! If someone asks me I will help them otherwise I don't worry about it.
  13. For those who are interested in working for an international organization it most certainly is a huge benefit career wise to be multilingual. If you are not involved in something like that then it would really depend on a variety of factors, most of which were mentioned in prior posts.
  14. Much of my learning a new language is done alone but in order to really immerse myself and have it become natural I need to be around others who speak it. We get together and share a meal and only are allowed to talk in our new language. The knowledge level of the group is varied so there is always someone their who is better at it than the rest, it helps in correcting any mistakes that we are making.
  15. It certainly can't hurt when learning a language and its a fun way to learn. I haven't played any games in a different language, mainly because I never really thought that it might improve my ability to learn it. From now on I plan on doing it from time to time.
  16. What a clever way to keep people motivated and they look nice too! I like to post as much as I can on different forums, especially this one. It sharpens my mind and writing and I learn quite a new things about language, and the learning of it, each time I log on.
  17. Yes, the American dialects are fascinating and one doesn't have to go very far in order to experience them. I live in Connecticut, a small state, and by traveling less than fifty miles I can experience a noticeable change.
  18. Generally I don't and I find it annoying when someone does it to me. If someone asks if what they said is correct I will help them but I hate to ruin an otherwise good conversation by criticizing someone. Giving unsolicited advice for any topic is never wise to begin with, its just plain rude.
  19. Generally I do fairly well and believe that I am continually improving at it. I took a free class in reading body language and got a lot out of it. Its a learned skill for most people because many people really aren't all that observant.
  20. Although she still reeked of innocence her eyes told me another story.
  21. How could the monster think that my dress is hideous, it is one of my favorites! Snapping back into reality she wondered what had become of her tiger...
  22. They most certainly have a language, otherwise they wouldn't be able to communicate with one another. Dogs, wolves, and other canines are masters of body language as well, they wouldn't be able to hunt successfully as a pack without tacit signals between one another.
  23. I've never tried any breathing exercises for improving my speech and I am curious what you have tried and what your success was with them. How long have you been doing them and what has been the result?
  24. I find it much more difficult to speak a new language than read it or write it. Seeing the words when I am writing helps me to piece together the puzzle easier. When I am learning to speak it I am constantly translating back and forth in my mind and tend to miss the nuances of the language.
  25. But was he gone or had he just simply concealed himself from me in another room? The hair on the back of my neck prickled with an electrical energy induced by fear.
