  1. Teaching any subject through the avenue of songs is a great idea and one that I do appreciate. I remember this method being used by my History teacher in high school. The students looked forward to History class because it motivated us to learn and helped us to recall information quite easily.
  2. We are all busy people so if my friends use shortcut at times then that's fine with me. However, if they make it a habit, I get annoyed although I don't really let them know how I feel. I'll just assume that they were in a haste but I don't respond in shortcut so that should have sent them a message.
  3. I don't have a favorite foreign movie but I like watching them. I will watch mainly Spanish since I understand most of what is being said. I don't care much for Japanese movies although I do watch them. I am however, excited about Hindi but I must confess I understand every action but nothing said.
  4. I have heard people speak French Creole and it is a little disturbing to me. I'm not sure if it's the people or the language but even a normal conversation sounds like a big quarrel to me. However, I love hearing French so I don't know what the big difference is.
  5. If we all spake one language it could be good as well as bad. One good thing is that it would help counties to be more developed because there would be no communication barrier in trade and other welfare aspects. I believe that just the way the story of the Tower of Babel tells of what the people did because they spoke one language, even more serious things would take place and that would be bad. We would also not have any need to learn new languages and communicate about and that would be a little boring.
  6. I would have to say Ability, passion and purpose. It is very difficult to do well at anything when there is no passion inside for that thing. If you have a purpose then you will make an effort and also strive for excellence in order to fulfill that purpose. However ,you need to have the ability, otherwise you could even get to the end of your studies and find out that you still have not mastered the language because of your inability to do so.
  7. I think that if everyone spoke the same language it could be good for some things, for example, trading and other aspects among countries. It could also turn out to be bad too. I believe that just the way the story of the Tower of Babel tells of how people started to think and act out things the same would happen. Also, we wouldn't have any need to learn new languages and communicate about so that would be a little boring too.
  8. I doubt I would do very well at identifying many different languages. I would have to listen for basic words from those that I am a bit familiar with but those that I am not, would be very much harder for me.
  9. I think the basic things would be most important. So knowing how to greet and other courtesies would be the first thing. Then asking for the location of important places like the hospital, the embassy, police station and library would follow.
  10. My native language, Creole is a very unique language. It would be difficult to make an error since the language is not a formal one. I find that within the country, people from each parish also have a distinct way of using some words so a person from one parish could think that someone else from another parish had made a mistake when it was simply a difference in the way a word is being used.
  11. I would definitely fall in the read/write and visual category. When I studied I always recall the things that I see and read or jot more. Even if I scribble I would remember those things more and if I ever forget I bring my thoughts back to wherever I scribbled the information and everything would just come right back.
  12. No, I've never had such opportunity but it does sound interesting. It might also be a bit frightening for some as not everyone can deal with language immersion. For others though, this could be the best way for them to learn a new language.
  13. I believe that learning new language depends on a persons interest. Sometimes people find themselves in situations that cause them to definitely have to learn a language or it may just be their love for a certain language. A persons interest could also have them learning even much more than 2 languages.
  14. For me I would have to say responding to someone in the language or at least understanding most of what was said. I think I could do ok with reading so fluency would be my proof.
  15. As parents we tend to feel a little out of place when the kids don't adhere to our wishes. I would encourage the child to take up a language but I wouldn't hold it against the child if he/ she insist on not taking it. We were a bit disappointed when our daughter didn't so I know what you mean.
  16. Elly, I like that one. How did your friend ever think of such dramatization. That must have caused everyone to have a good laugh. I hope your friend wasn't embarrassed.
  17. The fact that there are countries that speak several languages among themselves makes sixty nine hundred is a great figure which I think is possible for the amount of languages in the world today. I even think more continues to emerge so I guess a linguists study will never cease.
  18. My toughest and strictest teacher was my sixth grade Primary school teacher. She was a good teacher who made certain that we all performed well both in academics and behavior. After all it was our year for the big school leaving exams and not only did she want to feel proud but she did it for us and our parents too. She wasn't afraid to come down hard on us with the strap and other punishments when we under performed. My teacher and all 43 students and their parents were quite proud on graduation day.
  19. I doubt very much that there will ever be a correct answer to the question. The African continent has 1500-2000 languages so based on that amount I would assume that there could be close to 6000 different languages in the world. After all some countries have several different languages among their people so I could definitely see a high figure. :amazed:
  20. My girl friend was mocked and talked about in New York as she traveled on the subway. She allowed the girls to have their way until she came to her stop she let them know all that they had said about her. They were quite shocked. If only they knew that she was a high school Spanish teacher none of it would have happened.
  21. It would be a little strange to forget words in my native language unless maybe I wasn't using it much. I think the words in my native language are somewhat basic too, so that makes it hard to forget. I think this would more likely happen to a child who doesn't know all the vocabulary yet.
  22. Rosa

    Synergy

I have never heard of synergy and I don't know If I could agree on that . I know much more than 138 Spanish words and I struggle with the language, plus I get uncomfortable when I can't come up with the word to complete my statement. I definitely don't think 138 words is enough.
  23. That sounds like a brilliant idea for anyone who would like to improve on their new language. I would definitely come and grasp whatever I can too. I'm sure your friend would enjoy such circle, learning Spanish while exchanging food ideas, great.
  24. I've seen this a few times and just thought of it as funny :clown:. I think they sometimes place these subtitles there because they want it to look as if the movie is in more than one language. When examined, you find that some of them are ridiculous. It would seem as if because a script was too long, the translation got shortened to fit that slide or the translator did an imperfect job. I doubt anyone even double checked before these movies hit the screen.
  25. It so happens that none of us are perfect. I sometimes wonder after posting something if I had made any errors and hope I don't get laughed at for it. This is a link I'll definitely go through sooner than later. Thanks.
