  1. Understanding native accent is very hard for me. When I was learning English language, I could understand what a person who is using English as a second language was saying, however, I could not understand what a person who was using English as a first language was saying. We will be able to understand native accent only when we practice language with natives. We need to learn communicative language.
  2. So far I have taught language only to one person. My cousin had very bad English and he asked me if I could tutor him. I am not a language teacher, but I have studied English language in college and even attended communicative language in British Council. I could not make him perfect, however, I was able to help him brush his language skills. In my experience, while teaching language, you need to understand the learning capabilities of your students.
  3. I agree. Learning conversational language is the most difficult part of learning any language. If you learn language by reading, it is likely that your language will be stilted. Therefore, in order to develop language skills you need to learn spoken language. On books you will not find "I am gonna do this" kind of language. However, while speaking people wil be using this kind of phrases.
  4. I agree with your view. Having skills in the languages is not enough to become a translator, you need to have understanding of the language used in the text. Word to word translation always fail. If you do word to word translation, you will sound more like Google. You need to understand the content. Thus, these days translation is usually referred as transliteration.
  5. I came to know about Duolingo on this forum, however, I am yet to try this app.I have not even checked this out. Is this an app to be used on a smartphone? Is this available for Android market? If the answer is yes, I may look for this app on Google Play. Since this is free, I don't see any harm in trying this out. I want to brush up my English and learn French. Hopefully, this app will be useful for me.
  6. If you are trying to learn a language which follows different script and grammar, it will be very difficult to learn it. However, if you are trying to learn the language which is more or less similar, it will be easy. For example, for someone who knows Hindi language, it will be easier to learn Sanskrit, however, French speaking individual will find it difficult.
  7. I am on goodreads. I have friends on goodreads, I have even rated and reviewed books on goodreads. However, I don't use this site currently. I believe this is a great site for book lovers to find books, share your ideas about books and connect with the people who have similar interest. If you have time, this is a great site. I abandoned the site just because I did not have time.
  8. There are many controversies regarding Shakespeare. Did he actually exist? Did he actually write those works? Is Shakespeare person and dramaturge Shakespeare the same person? If we doubt something, the discussion will never end. Thus, I believe Shakespeare was real, he wrote those dramas.
  9. I am not familiar with shortcuts, thus I also use full sentences with proper grammar and spelling. In doing so I will be using too many character and cross the character threshold and which may lead to sending two messages instead of one. However, I am fine with that. By the way I don't use text message system to much.
  10. I am interested in brushing my English and learning French. How to you tutor, on VOIP services such as skype and viber? Through chat or via your website? What is the duration of your language course, how much do you change. What kind of learning materials do you offer? You have provided little details, I may take your course if it is affordable.
  11. I never got an opportunity to use LiveMocha. It surely sounds interesting language app. I wish I knew it before it closed it down. Based on your description,I think I like the credit system. Compensating the tutors for their work also sounds very interesting. However one drawback that I spotted about this app is limitation of languages. Availability of languages make the app very limited. There are many language apps that support more than 30 languages.
  12. Actually, there is no such thing as easy language. If you have interest you will find it easy and it you are uninterested, you will find it hard. You should not try to learn a language just because you find it easy. The motive of learning language should be: Gain knowledge Find work Traveling to the place where that language is spoken,
  13. I am interested in brushing up my English language skills. I have never heard about this site, however, from what I have read on this thread, this is a kind of website I am looking for.I don't use skype much, however, I am on skype. I will check this site and try to spend at least one hour every day and make my English better.
  14. Couple of years ago, I worked on a language guide book for a client. I am not a language tutor, however, I can teach Nepali conversational language. If you are in Nepal, the ability to speak the native's tongue will help you. You can always count on me.
  15. You make an interesting point. You need to become fluent on two languages to become a translator. You can speak two languages does not mean you can do the translation. In order to become a translator, you must have skills to write on both languages. If you can write, you can definitely translate.
  16. One of the reasons for not being able to learn a new language is not having time. A learner always find difficult to manage time for learning a new language. When I am learning a new language, I find hard to study the language. After working all day long, I find difficult to stay focused in the new language. Another difficulty is practice. If you don't practice, you will never learn. The only to to remain motivated to learn the language is by having a purpose of learning.
  17. There are numerous books that I wish were translated to my native language. I wish One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Ulysses by James Joyce were translated to my native language. These two are a great fiction of 20th century. Among non-fiction, Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl is my favorite book. This book is based on a research by a doctor in Hitler's Concentration camp. I wish this was translated to my native language.
  18. When I was in high school we had an essay in our English course. The essay listed many translation mistake. Here is one of my favorite. Indian President goes to Germany and German Chancellor says who are you (He actually meant how are you). I have seen translation mistakes on Chinese products. Some of the mistakes are funny where as some of the mistakes are vulgar.
  19. I know some translation apps that I used for some time. Later I discovered that these apps were actually taking help from Google translate. Most of the translation app, including Google translate does word to word translation and the language does not actually make any sense.
  20. I think its Korean. However, I cannot decipher what it exactly says. By the way Korean as well as Japanese language evolved from Chinese script and looks and sounds like Chinese language.
  21. I learned Hindi language by watching Hindi movies. Currently, I can read, write and speak Hindi. I may not be as fluent as the natives, but I am good at Hindi conversation. Movies are a great tool to learn languages. Mimicking is a great way to learn.
  22. In my experience and observation, there should be a purpose of learning a language. I learned English language, and currently English is my working language. I learned French, however, in absence of proper usage, I am banning to forget the language. The best way to learn a language is to have a purpose of learning the language. If you have a purpose, you will continue to use it and develop skills.
  23. How difficult is poetry translation? Do you think word to word translation can do justice to the poetry?Do you think translated poetry can keep the essence of the original poetry?
  24. If you know more than one language, you can work as a translator. Translation is a good paying job. I know English (foreign language) and Nepali (mother tongue). I have translated articles, books, and journals. I get more from translation compared to writing original. Have you worked as a translator?
