How to use the elf name generator

  1. Choose the type of elf: high elf, wood elf, dark elf, half-elf, snow elf, or Christmas elf. Any elf mixes the five fantasy types.
  2. Pick a gender, then a format: first and last name, first name only, or last name only.
  3. Tap a name to copy it, or press ♥ to keep it in your favorites. Generate again for a fresh list.

The elf name generator draws on 728 hand-written first names and 282 family names, and it also builds new first names from each elf type’s own syllables. Every type has its own sound, so a high elf never gets a dark elf name.

Female elf names

Female elf names tend to end in a vowel or a soft consonant: -iel, -wen, -wyn, -elle, -ara. Dark elf names keep the feminine ending but swap the soft middle for sharper sounds such as z, x, and k.

High elf names

High elves are the scholars, mages, and nobles of most fantasy settings, and their names sound formal. They are long, rich in vowels, and full of ae, el, and ia. Family names point to the sky and to precious things: stars, dawn, silver, crystal.

Wood elf names

Wood elf names are shorter and softer, and many are rooted in real plant and landscape words: Rowan, Linden, Yarrow, Briarwen, Fernalie. Elowen is a real Cornish name that means “elm.” Wood elf family names are compounds taken from the forest.

Dark elf names

Dark elf names use harder consonants (z, x, v, k, th) and darker vowels, with an apostrophe now and then. Use the apostrophe sparingly; one per name is plenty. Instead of a nature surname, a dark elf usually carries the name of a house, so the generator sometimes writes the name as “of House …”.

Half-elf names

A half-elf grows up between two cultures, and the name shows it. The generator pairs a human first name with an elven family name, or an elven-sounding first name with a human surname, so each name carries both sides.

Lord of the Rings style elf names: what makes a name sound elvish

The elvish sound most readers know comes from Tolkien, a language scholar who shaped his elven names with great care. This page does not use any of his names or words, but the general qualities of that style are easy to describe:

  • Liquid consonants. The sounds l, r, and n carry most names, helped by soft th, v, and s. Hard stops like k, g, and b are rare.
  • Open vowels. Plenty of a, e, and i, often in pairs such as ae, ia, and ie.
  • Familiar endings. Female names often end in -iel or -wen, male names in -ion or -dir.
  • Predictable stress. Stress the second-to-last syllable when it is heavy (tha-LEN-dir, sil-VAN-ya), and move one syllable back when it is light (LU-ma-reth, AU-re-wen).

Name elements used in this generator

These are this generator’s own building blocks, with the meanings assigned to them here. They are not taken from any published elvish language. A few borrow from real languages: bryn is Welsh for “hill,” eira is Welsh for “snow,” lumen is Latin for “light,” and nyx is Greek for “night.”

Real names that mean elf

Elves appear in several old given names. In Old English and Old Norse, the word for “elf” was a common first part of a name:

Aelfricelf rulerOld English (Ælfric)

Tips for naming a D&D elf

  • Match the subrace. Use High elf for high elves, Wood elf for wood elves and rangers, Dark elf for drow, and Half-elf for half-elves. Snow elf suits arctic campaigns.
  • Think in three names. In D&D, an elf goes by a child name until adulthood, then chooses an adult name, and also has a family name. Generate a short first name for the child name and a longer one for the adult name.
  • Say it at the table. The other players will say the name for months. If nobody can pronounce it on the first try, pick a shorter one or agree on a nickname.
  • Let the surname tell a story. A family name like Dawnspire or Fernhollow hints at where the family comes from, which gives you a backstory hook for free.

Christmas elf names for your shelf elf

Christmas elves are a different kind of elf altogether: small, cheerful helpers from the North Pole with names made of sweets, snow, and bells. Choose Christmas elf in the generator for names like these. They suit a family’s scout elf, a classroom elf, a holiday story, or a costume.

How to pick a good elf name

  • Keep it easy to say. Good elf names are short enough for the youngest child in the house to pronounce and remember: Pip, Tinsel, Cocoa.
  • Name the elf after what it does. A fast elf can be Zippy or Dash, a sweet tooth can be Gumdrop or Toffee, and a clumsy one can be Tumble.
  • Let the children vote. Generate a list, save three or four favorites with ♥, and let the family choose.

Many families need a name each December when a new elf arrives as part of The Elf on the Shelf tradition. That name is a trademark of its owner; this page is an unofficial list of name ideas and is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.

Frequently asked questions

How does the elf name generator work?
Choose a type of elf (high, wood, dark, half-elf, snow, or Christmas), a gender, and a format: first and last name, first name only, or last name only. Each type has its own hand-written names and its own syllables, so the names match the kind of elf you picked.
What are some good female elf names?
Aelisande, Faelwen, and Lumiriel suit a high elf; Elowen, Brynwen, and Lirawen suit a wood elf; Eirwen and Nivara suit a snow elf; Nyxara and Velkyra suit a dark elf. Set Gender to Female for more.
What are some good male elf names?
Aelarion, Thalendir, and Lorandir work for a high elf; Rowan, Sylvar, and Thalen for a wood elf; Eiran and Kaelvir for a snow elf; Zarek and Velkor for a dark elf. Set Gender to Male for more.
What is a good elf last name?
Most elf last names join two short words: Starcrest and Dawnspire for high elves, Fernhollow and Willowshade for wood elves, Frostveil for snow elves. Dark elves use a house name such as Vyrkoth instead. Choose Last name only to see more.
Can I use these names for a D&D elf?
Yes. Pick High elf, Wood elf, Dark elf (for drow), or Half-elf to match your character. The names are original and are not copied from any rulebook, so you can use them freely at your table.
What are good names for an Elf on the Shelf?
Choose Christmas elf for cheerful names such as Jingle McSparkle, Pepper Sugarplum, Tinsel Twinkletoes, or Cocoa Snowpants, plus funny ones like Sir Jingles-a-Lot and Figgy McPudding. There are separate lists for girl, boy, and funny elf names on this page.
Are these Lord of the Rings elf names?
No. Every name is original. The page explains what gives that style its sound, such as soft consonants, open vowels, and endings like -iel and -ion, but it does not use Tolkien's names or languages and is not affiliated with any rights holder.
