  1. A friend of mine is a very gifted writer who writes poetry on her spare time. I love her poetry, which is mostly inspirational based on her own experiences gathered through several decades. I would need to ask her for permission to post some of her works so you could judge yourself about her writing.
  2. i used an old Collins dictionary, 1981 edition and it was always truly handy to me. Since the arrival of the internet into our lives, I mostly use online dictionaries, but I don't have a favorite. Even though I want to share a tip with you; when you need to find what a word means or its spelling, use google to find it out, but do it this way: define this-word If you put "define" before your word or term, Google will return its best bet, but also a link to their reference room, where you can find the same word defined by different web sources so you can choose what best matches your needs.
  3. I believe the great thing about this forum is that it open the opportunity to practice the different languages with native speakers, who may also correct us when we are making wrong use of grammar and spelling. Yes! this is the goal of this forum and I really love it!
  4. Actually English is part of education in many countries because in this global world who doesn't speak English or at least understand it a little bit, will be easily left behind when it comes to find a job. However and beyond work and business matters, English is essential to communicate one another because it's an universal language that is taught around the world, even if just the basics.
  5. My first 3 years of language learning included classes shared with other 40+ students. Later i went into a summer intensive course and the group was reduce to 10 students. By college time groups were of about 20 persons, and nowadays I keep learning but alone.
  6. English Grammar Course This is lesson 1, but from here you can continue with the following lessons
  7. I can't remember what where my first words, and nobody seems to recall. Some people say that a mother never forget the special moment at which the baby begins to talk, but my mother say she can't remember. I'm sure that if my maternal grandmother would be alive, she would knew this. She really loved me so much and often was more supportive than my own parents.
  8. Got a tablet and it came setup in Chinese. Being my first tablet, needles to say I had no idea what I was doing trying to change the language to either English or Spanish, which are the languages that I understand. Now, it's a piece of cake and I use to set it up back to Chinese any time my sister wants to borrow it because I know she can't understand Chinese either
  9. One thing is spelling properly and another typing properly. Many people can spell the words they are typing, but they cannot type correctly. Most people do it "at two fingers" rather that using all the fingers of both hands like typist do it. However not everybody is a typist and, in the rush to type something, they may easily go wrong with spelling. Even myself (being a former typist) make typos from time to time that seems like if I wouldn't know how to spell a word.
  10. When I started with my second language, writing it was the easiest part because I was always very proud of knowing my native language grammar, and I have always tried to perfect my grammar when it comes to the second one. Reading was not either so difficult, but more than writing it because at reading you usually find many words that you might not know. The hardest part to me is speaking the language because I'm always uncertain of having the right pronunciation, some words are hard to me to pronounce, besides I feel like I'm slow compared with native speakers of advanced students that can do it better than I.
  11. I love the German culture and I can understand a few words and phrases in German, but I cannot speak it nor write it at all. Therefore, my next language to learn is German. I'm already subscribed to an online course from about.com, but I have not had time to study and practice the lessons they have sent me.
  12. I was truly worry about my pronunciation knowing that some words are somewhat difficult to me, but I realized that this problem might not be about learning the correct pronunciation but about my own pronunciation in my mother tongue. With a Greek father, I had a friend that used to called me up when I was young and made a remark on my father's accent. Through the years, I found many people, besides my friend pointed at my "accent" but since I was not born in Greece I never thought I could have one but just speaking the language of the country where I was born like all other people do. Lie, seems that I have an accent, probably acquired from my parents, and this accents makes naturally difficult my pronunciation of certain words regardless the language they belong in.
  13. I mostly have found words with the prefix in- and un- like if they were interchangeable. In example intolerant and untolerant, infallible and unfallible, and so on. Of course, I have also seen as common practice removing the apostrophe from many I'm, don't, you're, you've, just to say a few. Even though, I believe this type of distortions (or whatever they could be called) are non-exclusive of the English language, because I have seen equivalent actions applied to Spanish words.
  14. No problem asiong, I hope this is ebook can help you and anyone wanting to learn Spanish, which is certainly a beautiful and rich language. Probably because this is why many people fear somewhat scared of it, having some extra grammar rules than English and a much larger vocabulary. However is not that hard when you really get involved in learning it.
  15. Try to learn a new world every day, keep listening to Spanish sources regardless you understand them or not; try to pick some of those words and try to find then in your dictionary. Practice with someone who already speaks Spanish asking him or her to correct you when you are wrong or give you a hint when you forget a world. Use Google translate to find how a world or a phrase is pronounced in Spanish, just click on the little mic that appears next to the translations.
  16. I try to improve my grammar every day as my work involves writing in English all kind of information intended to reach English speakers. I'm aware not all of them can write properly, but I know that my job is being evaluated by its grammar, and have to make sure it's withing the standards of good writing.
  17. Capitalization is important to show that you learned grammar sometime in life, but when it comes to stay touch with family and friends it 's not necessary if you don't want and this behavior is less harmful to the language that the "shorthand" language resulting from texting messages from one cell to another. However proper capitalization is mandatory in formal and business writing, unless you want to prove you are incompetent to write properly within such context.
  18. While I have to agree that movies are of great help to learn English, I would like to point at pronunciation. If you like to watch movies from the 1940s-1950s, the pronunciations sounds neat and English is easy to understand. The 1960s-1970s are still comprehensible but at this stage we begin to listen to idiomatic expression and different accents whether if the movies if a USA production or from the UK. From the 1980 and onward, there are time when it's hard to understand what people says, and not just for English learners, but also for many English speaking natives. However this is a good hearing training because one way or another you will find in real life people that talks English in too many ways and speaking speed.

  20. Jeez or Geez I use geez, but when in doubt I use two sources for uncommon words which are more likely slang. The most authoritative is the Free Dictionary, http://www.thefreedictionary.com/ The most informal but with real street-people contributions is the Urban Dictionary, http://www.urbandictionary.com/
