Every name comes from a hand-written word bank: 483 adjectives and 763 nouns sorted by genre (at least 55 nouns for each one), 1019 ready-made one-word names, and 84 joke names. Types of band names
Almost every band name follows one of five patterns. The generator’s Style option matches them.
- The + plural. The classic pattern: the band is a gang, and each member is one of them. Add an adjective (The Velvet Lanterns) to make it your own.
- Adjective + noun. Two words that do not normally meet, such as a color and an animal or a material and a place. Led Zeppelin, a lead airship, is the classic example.
- One word. Short, bold, and easy to print large. Radiohead and ABBA are single words you will not find in a dictionary, which made them easy to own.
- Name + the backing band. “Ruby and the Lanterns” puts the singer in front. It suits soul, rock and roll, country, and any band with one clear leader.
- Phrases. A short sentence fragment, like “Chasing the Comet” or “Lanterns for Wolves.” Phrases are easier to find unclaimed, because there are so many more of them.
How famous bands got their names
Many of the best-known names in music started as jokes, tributes, or happy accidents. That is a useful reminder not to overthink yours.
| Band | Where the name comes from |
|---|---|
| The Beatles | A play on the word “beat” and a nod to Buddy Holly’s band, the Crickets. |
| The Rolling Stones | Taken from “Rollin’ Stone,” a song by blues musician Muddy Waters. |
| Led Zeppelin | From a joke that the band would go down like a lead balloon. The “a” was dropped so nobody would say “leed.” |
| Pink Floyd | Syd Barrett joined the first names of two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. |
| Lynyrd Skynyrd | A tongue-in-cheek tribute to Leonard Skinner, a gym teacher at the members’ high school who enforced the rule against long hair. |
| ABBA | The first letters of the four members’ names: Agnetha, Björn, Benny, and Anni-Frid. |
| AC/DC | Malcolm and Angus Young’s sister saw the letters, which stand for alternating current/direct current, on a sewing machine. |
| Radiohead | Named after “Radio Head,” a song by Talking Heads. The band was called On a Friday before that. |
| Fleetwood Mac | Built from the surnames of the rhythm section, drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie. |
| Foo Fighters | “Foo fighters” was a World War II pilots’ term for unidentified flying objects. |
| Daft Punk | A British music paper dismissed the duo’s earlier band as “a daft punky thrash,” and they kept the insult. |
| BTS | Short for Bangtan Sonyeondan, Korean for “Bulletproof Boy Scouts.” |
How to choose a band name
- Say it out loud. You will repeat it on stage, on the phone, and to sound engineers. If people ask “How do you spell that?” every time, pick something simpler.
- Make it searchable. A common word on its own is hard to find online. Two unusual words together, or one coined word, will bring up your band and nothing else.
- Check streaming services. Search the name on the big music platforms. If another act already uses it, your songs may end up on the same artist page.
- Check social handles and domains. You want the same handle everywhere. A small change, like adding “band” or “music,” is fine if the main name is free.
- Check trademark registers. Before you print anything, search the trademark database in your country (in the United States, the USPTO search) for bands with the same or a similar name.
- Picture it on a poster and a T-shirt. Short names can be printed large. Long names need a shape: two lines, a logo, or initials.
- Sleep on it. Save a shortlist with ♥, wait a week, and see which name the whole band still likes.

Frequently asked questions
- How does the band name generator work?
- It picks words from hand-written lists for the genre you choose and fits them into one of five patterns: The + plural, two words, one word, a phrase, or a funny name. Press Generate again for a new list; names do not repeat during your visit.
- Can I use a band name from this generator?
- Yes, the names are random word combinations and free to use. The generator filters out well-known acts, but it cannot know every band in the world, so search streaming services, social media, and a trademark database before you commit to a name.
- How do I make a band name with my own word?
- Type a word in the “Include a word” box, such as your town, a color, or the singer’s name, and press Generate. Most results will use it, for example as “The Denver Wolves” or “Denver and the Lanterns.”
- What makes a good band name?
- A good band name is easy to say and spell, easy to find in a search, and fits the music. It should also look right on a poster and a T-shirt, and be free on streaming services and social media.
- How do K-pop groups get their names?
- Most K-pop group names are short coined words or abbreviations chosen by the label, often with a meaning that is explained when the group debuts. BTS, for example, is short for Bangtan Sonyeondan. The K-pop option generates invented names in the same style.
- What are some funny band names?
- Try Dad’s Garage Is Full, Our Drummer Is Late, The Awkward Silences, or Three Chords and a Snack. Choose “Funny & weird” in the Style menu for many more.
- Is the band name generator free?
- Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign-up and no limit, and your favorites are saved on your own device.
