How sentences are counted
The tool counts a sentence as a chunk of text ending in a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). Automatic detection is not perfect — abbreviations such as “Dr.” or “e.g.” can occasionally be counted as sentence endings — but for ordinary prose it is accurate.
Why sentence length matters
Long, winding sentences are harder to read. A widely used guideline is an average of about 15–20 words per sentence, with variety between short and long. This tool shows your average and highlights your longest sentence so you can break up the ones that run on — a quick way to improve readability.
