What is a sentence counter?

A sentence counter tells you exactly how many sentences your text contains, updating instantly as you type or paste. Alongside the sentence count it shows words, paragraphs, your average words per sentence, and your longest sentence β€” useful for essays, assignments, and tightening your writing.

How to use it

  1. Type directly in the box, or paste text you already have.
  2. The sentence count and stats update live β€” no button needed.
  3. Use the stats to find and split overly long sentences.

How sentences are counted

The tool counts a sentence as a chunk of text ending in a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). Automatic detection is not perfect β€” abbreviations such as β€œDr.” or β€œe.g.” can occasionally be counted as sentence endings β€” but for ordinary prose it is accurate.

Why sentence length matters

Long, winding sentences are harder to read. A widely used guideline is an average of about 15–20 words per sentence, with variety between short and long. This tool shows your average and highlights your longest sentence so you can break up the ones that run on β€” a quick way to improve readability.

Is my text private?

Yes. The sentence counter runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never uploaded or stored, so you can safely count essays, drafts, and confidential documents β€” and it works offline. Need more? Try the Word Counter for a full breakdown of words, characters, and reading time.

Frequently asked questions

How does the sentence counter work?
It counts a sentence as text ending in a period, question mark, or exclamation mark. Paste your text and the count updates instantly, along with words, paragraphs, and sentence-length stats.
What counts as a sentence?
Anything ending with a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!) is treated as one sentence. Abbreviations with periods (like 'Dr.') can occasionally be over-counted, which is a limitation of automatic sentence detection.
Why does average sentence length matter?
Shorter average sentence length usually makes writing easier to read. Many editors aim for 15–20 words per sentence on average; the tool shows your average and your longest sentence so you can spot ones to split up.
Can I count sentences in an essay or PDF?
Yes. Copy the text from your essay, document, or PDF and paste it in. Everything runs in your browser, so the content is never uploaded.
Is my text private?
Yes. The sentence counter runs entirely in your browser β€” nothing you type is stored or transmitted, and it works offline.
