How to use the superhero name generator
- Choose what to generate: superhero names, superhero team names, sidekick names, or secret identities (the ordinary name your hero uses at the day job).
- Pick a power. This is a superhero name generator based on power: choose fire and you get embers and torches, choose ice and you get frost and glaciers. There are 15 powers, or leave it on Any power for a random mix.
- Pick a tone: classic (bright, comic-book names), funny, dark & gritty, or kid-friendly.
- The gender option only changes the titles: Lady, Madame, and Queen, or Mister, Sir, and Lord. Captain, Doctor, and Professor work for anyone.
- Type your name if you want to be the hero. About half the results will then use it: Captain Alex, Alex the Unstoppable, The Amazing Alex.
- Tap a name to copy it, or tap the heart next to it to keep a shortlist.
The superhero name generator puts its names together from 450 power words and 332 descriptors, all sorted by power, plus titles, team words, and sidekick words. Every result is a made up superhero name. Names of published heroes are filtered out, so you will not be handed a character that already exists.
How superhero names are built
Nearly every superhero name follows one of a handful of patterns. Once you can see them, you can also build a name by hand, and the generator simply does the same thing faster.
| Pattern | How it works | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Title + power word | A rank or honorific gives the hero authority; the word after it says what the power is. | Captain Ember, Doctor Paradox, Lady Aurora |
| Adjective + power word | A color or a strong descriptor in front of a noun. Adding “The” makes it sound like a legend. | The Sapphire Squall, The Blazing Phoenix, Glacial Avalanche |
| One compound word | Two short words joined into a codename that is quick to say and easy to shout. | Emberwing, Frostguard, Tidecaller |
| Power word + role | The power first, then what the hero does with it. | Comet Sentinel, Thorn Warden, Tempest Knight |
| Alliteration | Both words start with the same sound. It is the oldest trick in comics because it sticks in the memory. | The Glittering Glacier, Blazing Beacon, Mighty Mountain |
| The secret identity | A plain, friendly civilian name, very often alliterative as well. | Clara Calloway, Hugo Hawthorne, Nora Newell |
A power word on its own (a single noun such as a weather word or an animal) is the simplest pattern of all, and it is also the one most likely to be taken already. That is why the generator always adds a second element or joins two words.

Superhero team names
Team names come in two shapes. The first is “The” plus an adjective plus a plural (The Voltaic Vanguards). The second is a power word plus a group word such as Squad, League, Force, Guard, Alliance, Patrol, or Brigade. Use the superhero team name generator setting for a trivia team, a sports day, a tabletop campaign, or a group costume.

Tips for good superhero names
- Match the name to the power. A reader should be able to guess the power from the name alone. If the hero controls ice, a word such as frost, glacier, or winter belongs in the name.
- Keep it short. Two words or three syllables is typical. A name has to fit in a speech bubble and be shouted across a street.
- Say it aloud. Hard sounds (K, T, B, X) sound strong; long vowels and S sounds are smoother and more mysterious. Try the name after “Look, it’s…” and hear whether it works.
- Let the tone fit the story. A grim street-level hero and a cheerful hero in a children’s story need very different names, even with the same power.
- Give the hero a contrast. A dramatic codename next to an ordinary civilian name is half the fun of a secret identity.
- Check before you publish. For a costume, a game night, or a classroom story, any name here is fine. Before you use one commercially (in a book, a game, or on merchandise), search for it and check that it is not already a published character or a registered trademark.

Frequently asked questions
- How does the superhero name generator work?
- It combines power words, descriptors, titles, and team or sidekick words that are sorted by power and tone. Choose what you want to generate, pick a power and a tone, and press Generate for a new list each time.
- Can I get a superhero name based on my power?
- Yes. Choose one of 15 powers, including fire, ice, lightning, speed, strength, flight, tech, mind powers, shadow, light, nature, water, space, time, and magic. The names then use words that fit that power.
- Can I make a superhero name from my own name?
- Yes. Type your name in the box and about half of the results will include it, for example Captain Alex or Alex the Unstoppable. The rest are regular hero names you can use instead.
- Are these real superhero names?
- No. They are made up superhero names built from original word combinations, and names of well-known published heroes are filtered out. If you plan to use a name commercially, check first that it is not already a published character or a trademark.
- Does it make superhero team names and sidekick names?
- Yes. Switch the first option to Superhero team names for names like The Voltaic Vanguards or Comet Squad, or to Sidekick names for names like Kid Ember or Frost Scout.
- What does the gender option change?
- Only the titles. Female adds titles such as Lady, Madame, and Queen, and Male adds Mister, Sir, and Lord. Titles like Captain, Doctor, and Professor and all the other name patterns are the same for everyone.
- Is the superhero name generator free?
- Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and runs in your browser. Favorites are saved only on your own device.
