What does “cursed” mean online?

Online, cursed describes something that is unsettling on purpose, or wrong in a way that is hard to put into words. The word spread with “cursed images”: odd photos that leave you uneasy without showing anything truly frightening. From there it stuck to anything that feels off, from cursed comments to cursed pizza toppings.

Cursed text is writing with that mood. You can still read the letters, but they look haunted, with marks growing out of the top and bottom of every one. People also call it creepy text, scary text, demon text or void text. It looks like this:

How to make cursed text

1. Type your words into the box. Short works best: a name, a title, a single line.
2. Scroll to the six ready-made styles and tap the one you like. That copies it, ready to paste.
3. To shape it yourself, use the Make it your own panel. The How glitchy slider runs from 1 (subtle) to 20 (chaos), and three checkboxes, Above, Through and Below, choose where the marks go.
4. Tap Shuffle for a different random set of marks, and Copy when it looks right.

Two settings are worth trying for a spooky look, both at strength 8:

The cursed styles on this page

Heavy Glitch and Glitch

The two strongest styles come first. Heavy Glitch puts twelve marks on every letter and Glitch puts six. Heavy is for a single word that is meant to look swallowed. The medium one still reads as a sentence.

Upside Down + Light Glitch

The text is flipped and reversed so that it reads correctly when you turn the screen around, then lightly glitched. Good for a message that looks wrong at first glance and takes a second to decode. This style turns capitals into lowercase first, because flipped capitals are built from rarer symbols that turn into empty boxes once marks are added.

Lowercase and capital letters take turns, and every letter gets six marks. The uneven letter heights make the line look unsteady, like a note written by a shaking hand. It suits one unnerving sentence.

A space goes between every letter and a wider gap between words, then each letter gets three marks. It reads like a slow whisper. The added spaces count as characters, so keep this one for a short phrase.

Light Glitch

Three marks per letter and nothing else. It is the easiest to read, so use it for names and for anything longer than a few words.

Cursed text ideas for Halloween and horror

Halloween posts and party invitations

Curse the greeting and leave the rest alone. A caption that opens with a shaky, glitched “Happy Halloween” sets the mood. The date, time and address of the party should stay in plain letters so that nobody has to squint at them.

Horror story titles

For a spooky story, a campfire tale or a creepy post, a lightly cursed title tells readers what they are in for. Cursing just one word works well: “The House on Elm Hͨ͒͝i̘̍̂l̖̋̀ļ̜̑.” If the story should be findable by search, repeat the title in plain text in the first line.

Spooky usernames and Discord roles

Cursed text fits display names, Discord nicknames and role names for an October server theme: Ghost, Crypt Keeper, Night Shift, Pumpkin Patrol. Stay with the light styles here. Names appear small, and a member list full of heavy marks is unreadable.

Is cursed text a scary font?

People search for a cursed font or for scary fonts to copy and paste, but no font is involved. A font changes how letters are drawn on your own device. Cursed text changes the characters themselves, by adding accent-like Unicode marks after each letter. That is why the look survives copy and paste.

It also sets the limits. You cannot make the text red or have it drip like paint, because the app you paste into decides the color and the typeface. For lettering like that on a poster or an invitation, you need a real font in a design program. Cursed text dos and don'ts

Do:

• Keep it short. One word or one line has more effect than a paragraph.
• Use the light styles for names and anything people need to read quickly.
• Keep dates, links and instructions in plain text.
• Paste it where it will be used and check it on a phone before you post.

Don't:

• Flood a group chat with heavy cursed text. It covers other messages, and moderators treat it as spam.
• Try it in an @handle. Instagram, TikTok, X and Discord usernames only accept plain characters. Use the display name or nickname.
• Send it to frighten someone who is not in on the joke. This is for spooky fun.
• Rely on it for anything important. Screen readers stumble over the marks, and search may not find a word that carries them.

Where cursed text shows up properly

Most apps that accept Unicode will take cursed text in bios, captions, posts, comments and display names. How it looks is up to the app. Some let the marks spill over the lines above and below. Others cut them off at the edge of the message, which makes the heavy style look tamer. A few strip the marks altogether.

The styles put their marks on ordinary letters, so empty boxes are unlikely. (The upside-down style switches capitals to lowercase for the same reason.) On a very old device, or in an app that strips combining marks, the text may simply show up plain. Every mark counts toward character limits, so cursed text uses up a post or a bio quickly.
