What is a weird text generator?
A weird text generator rewrites what you type using characters that look like the letters A to Z but aren't. Type weird text and you get ШЄІЯD ТЄХТ, 山乇丨尺ᗪ ㄒ乇乂ㄒ, ₩ɆłⱤĐ ₮ɆӾ₮ and eleven more versions. Each one is ordinary text, so you can copy it and paste it into a bio, a display name or a chat. In other words, it is a Unicode text converter, not an image maker or a font.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text in the box (up to 1,000 characters).
- All 14 styles update as you type. Scroll through them.
- Tap a style, or its Copy button, and paste the result wherever you want it.
Short text works best. A name or a few words still reads at a glance; a full paragraph does not.
Where weird text letters come from
Where the weird letters come from
None of these characters were invented for decoration. Unicode, the standard behind the text on every phone and computer, covers more than 150 writing systems plus thousands of symbols. Each weird alphabet borrows the ones that happen to look like Latin letters. Here is the same phrase in every style:
| Style | “weird text” becomes | What the characters really are |
|---|---|---|
| Faux Russian | ШЄІЯD ТЄХТ | Cyrillic letters picked for their shape |
| Angular | 山乇丨尺ᗪ ㄒ乇乂ㄒ | Chinese characters, Bopomofo and a few other scripts |
| Curvy | ᗯEIᖇᗪ TE᙭T | Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics |
| Currency | ₩ɆłⱤĐ ₮ɆӾ₮ | Currency signs and Latin letters with a stroke |
| Faux Greek | ωєιя∂ тєχт | Greek and Cyrillic letters plus math symbols |
| Magic | աɛɨʀɖ ȶɛӼȶ | Phonetic (IPA) symbols and Armenian letters |
| Leet (1337) | w31rd 73x7 | Digits standing in for letters |
| Glitch | w͓͈̲ͩ̽͞ě́ͦ͛͐ͅi̩̞̓̈ͭ͢ŕ̺ͦ͛͐ͅd̠͙̊ͯͤ̕ t̻̂ͧ͑͆͜ê̻ͧ͑͆͜x̰̥̏̄ͩ̚t̵̪̟̔̉ͮ | Normal letters with combining marks stacked on them |
| Upside Down | ʇxǝʇ pɹᴉǝʍ | Phonetic letters that look flipped, in reverse order |
| Black Square | 🆆🅴🅸🆁🅳 🆃🅴🆇🆃 | Enclosed letters: white capitals on black squares |
| Parentheses | ⒲⒠⒤⒭⒟ ⒯⒠⒳⒯ | Enclosed letters: lowercase in parentheses |
| aLtErNaTiNg | wEiRd TeXt | Plain letters, every second one capitalized |
| Boxed Letters | 【w】【e】【i】【r】【d】 【t】【e】【x】【t】 | Plain letters inside East Asian brackets |
| Waves | ≋w≋e≋i≋r≋d≋ ≋t≋e≋x≋t≋ | Plain letters with a triple tilde between them |
Faux Russian
Sixteen letters are swapped for Cyrillic ones that resemble a Latin letter, often a mirrored one: Я for R, И for N, Д for A, Ш for W. The other ten stay plain. The shapes match, the sounds don't. A Russian reader reads Я as “ya”, И as “ee”, Д as “d” and Ш as “sh”, so ЯЦSSІД does not spell “Russia” to them. Two of the letters, Є and І, aren't even in the Russian alphabet; they are used in Ukrainian.
Angular
More than half of this alphabet is Chinese characters (also used in Japanese), chosen because their strokes resemble a letter. 山 stands in for W but means “mountain”, 千 for F means “thousand”, and 爪 for M means “claw”. The gaps are filled with Bopomofo, the phonetic symbols used in Taiwan (ㄥ ㄖ ㄒ ㄩ ㄚ), a Japanese katakana (フ) and a Cherokee letter (Ꮆ). To someone who reads Chinese, 卄乇ㄥㄥㄖ is a string of unrelated characters, not “hello”.
Curvy
Nineteen letters come from Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics, the script used to write Cree, Inuktitut, Ojibwe and other Indigenous languages of Canada, where most of these characters stand for a whole syllable. E, G, I, K, O, T and Y stay plain, which is why GᗩᗰE OᐯEᖇ is one of the easier styles to read.
Currency
Twelve letters are real currency signs: ฿ is the Thai baht, ₩ the Korean won, ₦ the Nigerian naira, ₱ the Philippine peso and ₴ the Ukrainian hryvnia. Most of the rest are Latin letters with a stroke or tail, such as Đ, Ø, Ɇ and Ɏ. ₥Ø₦ɆɎ ₮₳Ⱡ₭₴ is the obvious use.
Faux Greek
Nine real Greek letters (α ι η σ ρ υ ν ω χ) and nine Cyrillic ones are mixed with the cent sign ¢, the math symbol ∂, the script ℓ and one Hebrew letter, נ. Greek readers get the same mismatch as Russian readers: η is a vowel but is used here as N, σ is an S used as O, and ρ is an R used as P.
Magic
Mostly symbols from the International Phonetic Alphabet, which linguists use to write down speech sounds (ɛ ɢ ɦ ʀ ʊ ʏ), plus six Armenian letters (ռ օ ք զ ֆ ա). Those are matched by shape only: ֆ is the Armenian F and stands in for S. Result: ʍǟɢɨƈ ֆքɛʟʟ.
Leet (1337)
Leet swaps nine letters for digits: A is 4, B is 8, E is 3, G is 6, I is 1, O is 0, S is 5, T is 7 and Z is 2. So “leet speak” becomes l337 5p34k. The name is short for “elite” and the habit goes back to 1980s bulletin boards. It is the only weird alphabet here made of plain keyboard characters, so it is also the only one that works in an @username.
Messy, flipped and boxed styles
The other seven styles change how the text is dressed, not which alphabet it uses.
- Glitch is the messy text generator of the set. It stacks accent marks above, through and below each letter. The Zalgo Text Generator has a strength slider for more or less mess.
- Upside Down flips each letter and reverses the order: ʇxǝʇ pɹᴉǝʍ.
- Black Square uses white capitals on black squares. A, B, O and P double as emoji (the blood-type and parking signs), so some phones show them as colored buttons. The tool adds a hidden marker that asks for the plain version, but not every app respects it.
- Parentheses has lowercase letters and the numbers 1 to 9. There is no 0.
- aLtErNaTiNg, Boxed Letters and Waves keep your normal letters and add capitals, brackets or wave signs around them.
Weird letters to copy and paste

Are these weird fonts?
People search for “weird fonts copy and paste”, but a font only changes how the same letters are drawn, and you can't install one on Instagram or Discord. What you copy here is different characters. That is why the look survives copy and paste, and also why it has limits: the reader's device needs a font that contains those characters. Recent phones and computers have nearly all of them. Older ones can show empty boxes, and the rarer the script, the more likely that is.
Where weird text works, and where it doesn't
- Instagram, TikTok and X: fine in the name field, bio, captions, posts and comments. Not in the @username, which only accepts plain letters, numbers, underscores and periods.
- Discord: fine in nicknames, server and channel names and messages. Not in the username, which is limited to lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods.
- Character limits: X counts many of these characters, including the Chinese shapes, the currency signs and the squares, as two characters each.
- Games: many only take plain letters and numbers in names. Leet and aLtErNaTiNg are the safe choices; test the others first.
- Search and hashtags: a name written as ᗯEIᖇᗪ won't come up when someone searches for “weird”, and a hashtag in these letters won't join the normal one.
What people use weird text for
- Display names, nicknames and clan tags that stand out in a list.
- One line of a bio, or a single word in a caption.
- Spooky or glitchy posts, where Glitch and Magic fit the mood.
- aLtErNaTiNg caps for the sarcastic tone the style is known for.
Readability and respect
Screen readers don't see a stylish W. They announce each character by its real name, letter by letter, or skip it. Keep anything important, like dates and instructions, in normal letters.
These are also real letters from living writing systems. Cyrillic, Chinese characters, Canadian syllabics and Armenian are how people write every day, and to them this output is nonsense, not their language. Using the shapes to decorate a few words is common and mostly harmless. Calling the result “Russian” or “Chinese”, or using it to make fun of how a language looks or sounds, is not. And don't use lookalike letters to pass as someone else's account.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I use weird text in my Instagram, TikTok or Discord username?
- Not in the @username itself, which only accepts plain letters, numbers, underscores and periods. Weird text works in the display name or nickname, the bio, captions, posts and comments. Leet is the exception, because it only uses normal letters and digits.
- Why do some weird letters show up as empty boxes?
- The characters are real Unicode text, but the device showing them needs a font that contains them. Recent phones and computers have nearly all of them; older ones can be missing the rarer scripts and show a box instead. If that happens, pick a different style.
- Can Russian or Greek speakers read the Faux Russian and Faux Greek styles?
- No. The letters are chosen for their shape, not their sound. A Russian reader sees Я as "ya" and И as "ee", and a Greek reader sees η as a vowel and ρ as an R, so the result reads as nonsense in those languages.
- What does 1337 mean?
- 1337 is the word "leet" written in leet itself: 1 for L, 3 for E and 7 for T. Leet is short for "elite" and replaces letters with digits that look similar. This tool uses 1 for I and keeps L as a letter, so it writes "leet" as l337.
- What is the difference between weird text and Zalgo text?
- Weird alphabets replace each letter with a different character that looks similar. Zalgo, or glitch, text keeps your normal letters and stacks combining accent marks above, through and below them. This page has one glitch style; the Zalgo Text Generator lets you set the strength.
- Does weird text use up more of a character limit?
- It can. X counts many of these characters, including the Chinese shapes, currency signs and squared letters, as two characters each. Boxed Letters and Waves also add extra symbols around every letter, so the text gets longer.
- Which weird style is the easiest to read?
- The styles that keep your normal letters: aLtErNaTiNg, Boxed Letters and Waves. Among the weird alphabets, Curvy and Faux Russian are usually the easiest, because several letters stay plain and the rest are close to the Latin shapes.
