Three ways to reverse text

“Reverse this” can mean reversing the letters, the words, or both. This backwards text generator, or reverse text generator, shows all three at once, so you can copy the one you meant. Here is the same sentence, The quick brown fox, run through each mode:

The first row is what most people mean by backwards text or reverse text. The second is a word reverser: use it to reverse words in a sentence without scrambling them. The third reverses letters word by word, which is easier to read back than a fully reversed line. Two more rows, Mirror and Upside Down, change the shape of the letters as well. They are explained further down.

How to use the text reverser

1. Type or paste your text in the box. Every row updates as you type.
2. Tap the row you want, or its Copy button.
3. Paste the reversed text wherever you need it.

To turn backwards text back into normal text, paste it in and copy the Backwards row again. Reversing twice gives you the original. With several lines of text, the Backwards row reverses everything, so the last line comes out first. The two word modes work line by line and keep your line breaks where they are.

How to spell a word backwards

Start at the last letter and work back to the first: backwards is sdrawkcab. The generator treats capitals, spaces, and punctuation like any other character, so they move too. Hello, world! becomes !dlrow ,olleH, with the exclamation mark in front and the capital H at the very end. If you want a tidy result for a puzzle, type in lowercase and leave off the final punctuation.

Palindromes: text that reads the same backwards

A palindrome reads the same in both directions. The name comes from Greek words meaning “running back again.” Single-word palindromes include level, racecar, noon, kayak, civic, and radar. Type any of them and the Backwards row matches the box exactly.

Palindrome sentences are judged by their letters only. Spaces, punctuation, and capitals are ignored. The classic is A man, a plan, a canal: Panama, which reverses to amanaP :lanac a ,nalp a ,nam A. The letters line up, even though the spaces and commas land in new places. Others worth trying are Never odd or even, Step on no pets, and Was it a car or a cat I saw?

To check a palindrome of your own, type it in lowercase with no spaces or punctuation, like neveroddoreven. If the Backwards row is identical to what you typed, you have one.

Semordnilaps: words that spell another word backwards

A semordnilap is a word that turns into a different word when you reverse it. The name is a joke: it is “palindromes” spelled backwards. English has plenty of them:

The first pair is the source of the old line that “stressed” is just “desserts” spelled backwards.

Names made by spelling backwards

Reversing a name is an old trick for inventing a new one. Oprah Winfrey called her production company Harpo, which is Oprah backwards. The given name Nevaeh is Heaven backwards. And the sorcerer in Disney's Fantasia is named Yen Sid: read it from the right.

Backwards vs. mirror vs. upside down text

These three get mixed up all the time. Backwards text changes only the order of the letters. Mirror text and upside down text also change their shape.

Where backwards text works

The three reversing modes use exactly the characters you typed, in a different order. Nothing is swapped for a special symbol. So reversed text is accepted wherever the original would be, and that includes places where fancy text is refused, such as Instagram, TikTok, and X handles, Discord usernames, and file names. It never shows up as empty boxes, and it counts toward character limits like normal text.

The Mirror and Upside Down rows are different. They use lookalike characters, so keep them for display names, bios, and messages.

A few things do break when you reverse them:

• Links, email addresses, and numbers. A reversed link no longer opens, and 2026 becomes 6202.
• Some emoji. Flags, skin-tone variants, and family emoji are built from several characters in a fixed order. Reversing can split them into separate symbols or turn a flag into a different one.
• Accents typed as separate marks. Most accented letters are a single character and reverse fine, but an accent stored as its own combining mark can end up on the neighboring letter.

What people use reversed text for

• Hiding spoilers and punchlines. ti did reltub eht will not be read by accident. On Discord there is also a built-in option: wrap the text in two vertical bars on each side and it stays hidden until someone taps it.
• Puzzles, riddles, and treasure hunts. Reversed clues are hard enough to slow people down and easy enough for kids to solve.
• Checking palindromes and hunting for semordnilaps.
• Names and usernames. Your name backwards may still be available when the normal spelling is taken.
• Reordering a sentence. Reversed word order gives odd, poem-like lines: noon at tree oak old the at me Meet.

One thing it is not is a secret code. Anyone can read backwards writing with a few seconds of effort. For a proper letter-swapping cipher, try the Atbash Cipher, which reverses the alphabet instead of the text, ROT13, or the Caesar Cipher.
