What is mirror text?

Mirror text is writing flipped left to right, the way it looks reflected in a mirror: Good morning becomes ǫninɿom booᎮ. Hold that up to a mirror and it reads normally again. This mirror text generator does the flipping for you. Type in the box, copy the mirrored line, and paste it wherever you want.

The result is text, not a picture. Each letter is replaced by a Unicode character shaped like its mirror image, so you can paste it into a bio, a message, or a document. That also sets its limits, which are covered further down.

How to make and read mirror writing

1. Type or paste your text in the box.
2. Tap the Mirror row to copy it. The backwards and upside down rows underneath are there so you can compare the three effects.
3. Paste it into your post, note, or puzzle.
4. To read it, hold the screen or the printed page up to a mirror. Without a mirror, read from right to left and turn each letter around in your head. It gets easy after a few lines.

To reverse mirror text that someone sent you, paste it into the box. The letters come back in the right order, although the lookalike characters stay flipped. A mirror gives a cleaner result.

How the mirror writing generator works

A mirror does two things to a line of writing. It reverses the order of the letters, and it turns each letter to face the other way. The mirror writing generator copies both steps: it reverses your text, then swaps each letter for a character that looks like its reflection. Letters fall into three groups.

Letters that stay the same

A letter with identical left and right halves is its own mirror image. In capitals that is A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, and Y. In lowercase the generator leaves i, l, m, n, o, u, v, w, and x alone, since they are symmetric or close to it in most fonts. A word built only from these needs no special characters at all: TOMATO comes out as OTAMOT.

Letters that turn into each other

Lowercase b and d are mirror images of each other, and so are p and q. That is why bed mirrors to bɘd: the b and the d swap shapes and swap places, so each ends up back where it started.

Letters that need a lookalike

Unicode has no mirrored alphabet, so every other letter borrows a stand-in from somewhere else:

A few of these are only approximations: Q becomes Ọ, Z becomes Ƹ, G becomes Ꭾ, and J becomes Ⴑ. Lowercase z has no usable mirror form and stays as it is. Numbers and punctuation are not flipped either. They only move to their new position, so Call me at 555-0199 turns into 9910-555 ƚɒ ɘm llɒƆ.

Words that look the same in a mirror

If a word is a palindrome and all its letters are symmetric, its reflection is identical to the original. MOM, WOW, TOOT, OTTO, AVA, and noon all pass through the generator unchanged. So do bid and bud, for the same reason as bed above. And mood mirrors into a different word: boom.

Mirror writing in history

The best-known mirror writer is Leonardo da Vinci. He wrote his notebooks in mirror script, running from right to left across the page. Nobody knows for certain why. The usual explanation is a practical one: he was left-handed, and writing right to left kept his hand from smearing the wet ink.

Lewis Carroll used the idea in Through the Looking-Glass, where the first verse of “Jabberwocky” is printed reversed and Alice has to hold the book up to a mirror to read it.

You have probably seen mirror writing in traffic too. The word AMBULANCE is printed reversed on the front of ambulances, like ƎƆИA⅃UꓭMA, so that a driver ahead reads it the right way around in the rear-view mirror.

Young children often write single letters or whole words in mirror image while they are learning. It is a normal stage and usually fades on its own.

Mirror text vs. backwards text vs. upside down text

Mirror text is not the same as simply reversing the letters. Backwards text keeps every letter facing the normal way, and upside down text is a half turn, not a reflection. A real mirror shows the difference:

Can I use it for T-shirt transfers and iron-ons?

No, and it is better to know that before you waste a transfer sheet. Iron-on transfers and heat-transfer vinyl often have to be printed or cut as a mirror image so the design reads correctly once it is pressed onto the fabric. But that calls for a mirrored image. This tool produces lookalike characters, not flipped letter shapes. Printed in your chosen font, several of them would not match the rest of the word, and a few are only approximations.

The right tool is already on your computer. Look for Mirror image or Flip horizontal in your printer's print settings, or flip the design horizontally in your design or cutting-machine software. That reverses the whole page exactly, in whatever font you picked.

Where mirror text works, and where it doesn't

• Works: anywhere that accepts Unicode text, such as bios, captions, comments, chat messages, display names, and Discord nicknames.
• Does not work: @handles and usernames. Instagram, TikTok, X, and Discord only allow plain letters, numbers, underscores, and periods there.
• Empty boxes: whether a character shows depends on the fonts on the reader's device. The rarer stand-ins, such as ꟻ, ꟼ, Ꭾ, and Ⴑ, are the first to fail on older phones. Lowercase text is the safer choice.
• Screen readers and search: these characters are read out one by one or skipped, and search will not match the original words. Use mirror text for a few playful words, not for anything important.

What people use mirror text for

• Puzzles and escape-room clues that can only be read with a mirror.
• Secret notes for kids. Print a mirrored message, hand over a small mirror, and you have a treasure hunt.
• Display names, bios, and captions that make people look twice.
